Toxic Tank Maker On The Run

A Hobart water tank maker's done a runner after concerns were raised about toxic levels of lead used to make them

The Department of Health and Human Services have had no luck tracking down the operators of Kingston Sheetmetal Rainwater Tanks after it was discovered at least 120 stainless steel tanks built between March 2010 and January this year created toxic lead levels - prompting them to issue a health warning to affected buyers not to clean teeth, drink or prepare food with the water.

Officers were confronted with locked gates when they visited the site last week - there's been no sign of the owners since.

The health alert doesn't apply to galvanised or stainless steel tanks made with rivets and silicone sealant.

Affected tank owners should call 1800 671 738
