Would-Be Arsonist Escapes Jail

A man who tried to torch a car over a major grudge against his lawyer has escaped jail time on the grounds of mental illness.

59 year old Peter Stephen Bomford from Chigwell had a chip on his shoulder over a compensation payout following a car crash 26 years ago, believing his lawyer Bruce McTaggart "ripped him off". He tried to set fire to a car outside Mr McTarrart's home in May last year - but it happened to be his wife's.

Bomford pleaded guilty in the Supreme Court yesterday but was given a one year wholly suspended sentence based on his mental state.
