Fire Cuts Tree-Sit Short

Protester Miranda Gibson has been forced to end her record-breaking tree-sit in the state's central west after a bushfire came dangerously close to the tree she's spent the last 457 days in. Fire Cuts Tree-Sit Short

A wildfire that burnt three hectares yesterday grew to 40 hectares this morning, at one stage coming to within just a kilometre of the old eucalypt.

While the Still Wild Still Threatened activist will no longer call a the Observer Tree in the Tyenna Valley home, Ms Gibson says she remains committed to standing up for Tasmania's forests under threat of being logged.

Days of high temperatures forecast next week prompted the move - Ms Gibson conceding it's the safe and sensible decision to climb down now rather than put lives at risk with the bushfire so close.
