Veteran fined for knuckleduster at airport

An Australian war veteran who served in Afghanistan has escaped conviction after being caught with a homemade knuckleduster in his carry-on luggage at Brisbane domestic airport.

Cameron Ross Barber told Brisbane Magistrates Court he most likely "didn't recognise" the knuckleduster in his bag, which was detected during an x-ray security screening on October 28, because of his familiarity with weapons during his service.

Magistrate Penelope Hay conceded that his five years in the army had "numbed" the 25-year-old Victorian "somewhat to observing weapons" and fined him $200, with no conviction recorded.
