Over a remarkable five-decade career in radio and television, Cometti became known for his precise and insightful commentary, paired with sharp wit and humor.

He formed an iconic partnership with fellow Hall of Fame member Bruce McAvaney during their Grand Final calls for the Seven Network.

Cometti, who called AFL games for three decades before retiring in 2016, is also remembered for coining several memorable phrases like “centimetre perfect” as well as the iconic AFL Grand Final moment when Heath Shaw spectacularly smothered Nick Riewoldt on the goal line. The moment was perfectly summed up by his now-famous line “he came up on him like a librarian, he never heard him.”

Cometti’s distinguished broadcasting career also saw him cover the Olympic Games, Test cricket, and basketball.

He also famously called Kieren Perkins’ iconic win from Lane 8 at the 1996 Olympics.

When Optus Stadium opened in Perth in 2018, its media centre was named in his honour.

Cometti was inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame in 2020, made an AM in the 2019 Australia Day honours, and was an 11-time winner of the AFMA media broadcaster of the year.
