Dementia Walking Day

Hope starts with one step – that’s the message from Bass Independent MP George Razay who is urging the community to get moving as he spreads the word about
dementia prevention. Professor Razay, who worked as a geriatrician at the LGH and led research into risk factors, diagnosis and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease and a treatable form of dementia called Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus, is getting ready to roll out his second Dementia Walking Day.

He is hoping that the March 29 event, to be held on a flat 3km-loop starting at the pedestrian bridge at Launceston’s Seaport, will bring together families, caregivers, health advocates and local leaders for a Sunday stroll that fosters awareness and sparks action.
Dementia Australia estimates there are 446,500 people living with dementia nationally, with that number likely to reach 812,500 by 2054. In Tasmania there are 11,200 people living with dementia, with the number expected to rise to 16,500 by 2054. An estimated 1.7 million people in Australia are involved in the care of someone living with dementia.

While there is no cure for dementia, Professor Razay says that physical activity is a major preventative measure with research showing that walking 3800 steps per day,
roughly three kilometres, can reduce the risk of developing the illness by 25 per cent, with the reduction in risk increasing the further people walk (Jamaneurol,2022.2672). Moreover, Professor Razay says that research shows exercise can improve cognitive and physical function in people with Alzheimer’s disease.

He says that activity of all types sustained over time can contribute to a lower dementia risk and better overall wellbeing. “Prevention starts with awareness and small daily habits – I want to encourage our community to stay active, stay connected and prioritise brain health at every stage of life.” Professor Razay points out that we all have the power to lower our risk factors with exercise, eating well, mental stimulation, quality sleep and social engagement all playing a part. “You don’t have to run a marathon, just get moving at a pace that suits you, and if you get to talk to a few people along the way, even better.”
