Meander Valley Council officers are set to wear body cameras.

The idea was given the green light by councillors at a meeting earlier this week, in a bid to increase safety as well as capture footage that can be used in evidence.

Mayor Wayne Johnston says it’s regrettable but a sign of the times.

“It’s disappointing we have to go down this path but it’s not uncommon for compliance officers around Tasmania to have this form of protection'” he said.

“Our compliance officers have experienced abuse directed at them and it’s become necessary we do this to look after our staff and this is just one way we can give them more confidence to go about their role.”

The council has been trialing the cameras for approximately six weeks.

He said the council has taken time to ensure the policy made sure the vision captured by the cameras isn’t used inappropriately.

“We’ve made use of policy that’s been used by other councils around the state,” he said.

“This is totally about compliance and the officers doing their job.”

He said that includes strict rules surrounding how the cameras are used including letting residents know when they are likely to be filmed.

“It may change the attitude of some people if they realise they are being recorded,” he said.
