Cricket Tasmania thief Renee Ferguson will have to wait until next month to find out whether she’ll be gaoled for her crimes.
The tearful 49-year-old appeared before Chief Magistrate Catherine Geason in court on Thursday morning due for sentence on dozens of stealing charges, but was bailed to reappear on March 1 after informing the court of some medical procedures interstate.
Ferguson stole $5600 in cash and Hurricanes memberships in 2017, the court hearing it came just six weeks after she was spared gaol with a 12-month suspended sentence for stealing nearly $30,000 from a previous employer.
Ferguson’s barrister Marcia Edwards implored her Honour for community service, telling the court that the shame surrounding Ferguson’s crimes and media attention from the separate sexual harassment case had prompted her to move to Victoria, where she hasn’t reoffended in the five years since.
Ms Edwards described the thieving spree as “four years of madness” which came in the context of her client’s marriage breakup and “unresolved trauma”.
Chief Magistrate Geason refused Ferguson leave to appear by video link for sentence, warning her there was a possibility of custody or home detention.
