Glenorchy pool in limbo

Glenorchy City Council will prepare a business case to seek funding for its Memorial Pool, as the crumbling facility remains closed due to safety issues.

Mayor Bec Thomas told Monday’s meeting while she’d love to revamp the pool, council has to be realistic.

“Sentiment alone isn’t enough to convince other levels of government that it’s worth investing in, it’s going to take money and lots of it; not only money to develop a replacement facility, but to fund the depreciation, maintenance and operation of a new facility going forward,” she said.

“Around this table we must make decisions with our heads rather than our hearts, that is our fiduciary duty.”

Meantime Hobart City has voted to lobby the Tasmanian Government to avoid popular recreation areas for a proposed AFL high-performance facility.

There has been talk of using Cornelian Bay or the Queens Domain.

“The Hobart City Council has recommended that Cornelian Bay and the Queens Domain should not be considered as suitable for a potential Tasmanian AFL team high performance training and administration facility,” said a Council statement after the meeting.

“Additionally, the Council resolved to seek an urgent meeting with the Minister and endorsed an approach that involves all Greater Hobart Councils collectively under the Greater Hobart Act.

“An amendment was also passed that the Council work with the Tasmanian government and southern Tasmanian councils for an overall plan for sporting facilities across all codes for outdoor sport.”
