The Macquarie Head boat ramp near Strahan has reopened to the public after the recent pilot whale rescue operation finally wrapped up.
All but two of around 200 carcasses have now been disposed of at sea.
Satellite tagging indicates two of the rescued survivors are now well south of Tasmania.
“This is positive news as this indicates that many of the rescued whales have been successfully released back into the Southern Ocean,” said incident controller Nic Deka.
“Of the 230 stranded whales reported on Wednesday 21 September, we successfully moved to deep water and released 44.”
Tasmanians are advised there’s a chance some carcasses could wash back up and the Environment Department will be conducting surveillance flights.
The community should report any sightings to the Whale Hotline on 0427 WHALES.
