Tas Politicians Pay Debate

State politicians’ base salaries rising around $30,000 (22%) in one hit remains a conversation doing the rounds in Tasmania.

The Industrial Commission’s salary determination could be largely attributed to a case of catch up because their wages had been frozen since 2018.

Yesterday, parliament approved the increase, despite efforts to block it by the Greens and the Liberals, led by Premier Rockliff.

“A 22% increase in politicians’ salaries did not align with community expectations, which is why I’m not accepting it.”

Tasmania’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s Michael Bailey supports the rise as well overdue.

“We know that politicians wages are a drop in the ocean when it comes to the overall state budget, what we want to see in the business community are the best people standing for parliament and we simply don’t get that when pay is so far out of whack.”
