The Rockliff Government is creating five dedicated police positions to monitor convicted sex offenders around the state in a $3.2 million initiative.
They’ll be embedded in existing commands across the Southern, Northern and Western police districts.
The funding will also lead to a new Sex Offenders Disclosure Program allowing parents or guardians to check whether someone who has unsupervised access to their child is on the sex offender register.
“Convicted sex offenders who are listed on the Sex Offender Register will be strictly monitored in accordance with their court orders by these officers,” said Police Minister Felix Ellis.
“We will progress these amendments, which will include community consultation, as a priority to further enhance Tasmania Police’s capability in responding to protecting the most vulnerable people in our community – our children.”
