Texting drivers beware

A new campaign is rolling out in Tasmania aimed at the scourge of drivers using their smart phones while on the road.

It’s called Click.Store.Go, with a reminder to fasten seatbelts and store the phone out of sight before taking off.

The Road Safety Advisory Council’s Scott Tilyard is putting drivers on notice that new cameras are coming on line which will detect phone use and unfastened seatbelts.

“These cameras are going to be out there, they are going through a trial period at the moment, but soon they will be issuing infringement notices to those people.”

Assistant Commissioner Jason Elmer outlines the penalties.

“Those offences that are detected by these cameras will result in a $362 fine and three demerit points to the offending driver.”
