Orgniasers estimating 6,000 people turned out to register their anger at the proposed AFL stadium development at Macquarie Point.

Author Richard Flanagan MC’d the event which saw speakers from across the political divide unite against the project, which the AFL has made contingent for Tasmania receiving a licence for a state team.

Speakers included Independent Senator Jacqui Lambie, Greens leader Cassy O’Connor, Hobart Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds, independent Nelson MLC Meg Webb and federal independent MP Andrew Wilkie.

Actor Essie Davis read a statement from the Liberal Member for Bass Bridget Archer.

Jacqui Lambie memorably telling the crowd “Listen and listen very carefully Rocky. Tasmanians have had a bloody gutful over your stadium. And you can stick it up your bum. That’s what’s going on.”

Andrew Wilkie said the state government has failed to act “in the public interest” and the Green’s Cassy O’Connor announcing her party will move to “knock the stadium off”.

Meanwhile Labor’s Rebecca White is remaining tight-lipped on whether Labor would scrap the stadium development if it were to win government. Labelling it as “the wrong priority for Tasmania” Ms White keen to see the fine print in the deals between the state, the AFL and federal government, before making a final decision.
