The number of near-misses on the state’s railways has almost doubled in the past 12 months and the largest number of offenders are on the North-West Coast.
TasRail says level crossing failure to stop or give way by road users has risen from 39 reports in 2022-23, to 69 for the same period this year.
The North-West Coast has the worst record, with 42 of the 69 cases reported occurring on the Coast.
34 were in the North of the state and five in the South.
This week is National Rail Safety Week, with TasRail again releasing more frightening CCTV footage of near misses –
(Check out the scary video below, taken from the cab of a train at a crossing near Merseylea on the North-West Coast).
In addition reports of pedestrians and cyclists trespassing into the rail corridor also show the North-West has the highest incidence, with 40 of 79 statewide on the Coast, with 20 in the North and six in the South.
TasRail risk and compliance principal Corrie Summers says TasRail is frustrated the situation is not improving.
