Welcome Stranger decision tonight

Whether 52 inner city apartments and supporting food and wine businesses sees the light of day on Hobart's Welcome Stranger site will be decided tonight by the City Council.

The plan was rejected by a council planning committee over its 45 metre height and design on advice from staff.

Meantime, Alderman Marti Zucco claims development opponent Hobart Not Highrise referencing the proponent's Chinese ethnicity on social media has turned racist.

"Since then, aldermen have been receiving emails from supporters of Hobart Not Highrise and one comment was we shouldn't be supporting Chinese and Mexicans in developing in Hobart."

He's also taken a dig at Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds for appearing to have no knowledge of this flurry of emails on the topic.

"More likely the Lord Mayor had seen all these emails and I find it absolutely concerning on radio this morning the Lord Mayor failed to condemn that and she acted as if she was not aware of it."
