Family and friends of a young man are grieving after a fatal car crash in the state's east.
It's understood the 20-year-old male driver from Richmond lost control of the Ford utility at around 4:30 this morning on Stonehouse Road near Tooms Lake.
He was taken to the Royal Hobart Hospital with minor injuries, but his front seat passenger - another 20-year-old male from Pawtella - was thrown from the vehicle and killed as it rolled.
Initial investigations suggest alcohol and failure to wear a seatbelt were contributing factors in the man's death.
"Anyone who observed the vehicle prior to the collision is asked to contact Senior Constable Adam Hall at Southern Crash Investigation Service on 62302111 or by contacting Crime Stoppers," a police statement said.
"Tasmania Police express their sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased."
