9 people have been charged following climate protests in Launceston last night.

Police say the vast majority of the around 100 Extinction Rebellion demonstrators were well behaved during the rally.

All but one of the culprits arrested are over the age of 63.

The group apparently failed to comply with police directions to move on after the demonstration permit period ended.

"All nine people were charged with fail to comply with a direction of a police officer," a Tasmania Police statement said.

Those charged were a 77-year-old Western Creek woman, a 77-year-old Exeter man, a 77-year-old Evandale man, a 77-year-old Lilydale woman, a 69-year-old East Launceston man, a 64-year-old Lilydale man, a 63-year-old Gravelly Beach man, a 65-year-old Punchbowl man and a 33-year-old East Launceston woman.

They'll face the Launceston Magistrates Court at a later date.
