Tasmanian Premier Will Hodgman has announced he's standing down both from the state's top job and from parliament altogether.

An emotional Mr Hodgman fronted the media this afternoon with his family and close friends, describing the impact the role has had on his personal life.

The shock announcement came with little warning, with the Premier saying he had only arrived at the decision in the last few days.

He says the time has come for the party and the state to have new leadership, given Tasmania is two years away from its next election, and this gives the Liberals enough time to have a settled leader in place for then.

"It's a personal decision that I've arrived at. I've consulted with my colleagues and my family. There's never a right time, or an easy time," Mr Hodgman said.

"No regrets, no excuses."
