Tasmania's Governor Kate Warner whose term was to expire in December will extend her time in the role by 6 months.
The 71 year old, who had a recent successful battle with cancer, has been approved by the Queen to stay on until June 9th, 2021.
Premier Gutwein making the announcement in parliament.
"The additional 6 month extension will provide stability to this important role and enable me to undertake the detailed and important work of making a recommendation to the Queen on the next Governor of Tasmania."
Labor leader Rebecca White is fully on board the leading light in legal and academic circles staying on longer.
"She's made an enormous contribution to our state and we certainly welcome the announcement by the Premier today, I think it's an excellent decision.
