Milk galore in Tasmania

Tasmania's output of milk has never been larger.

For the financial year just completed, the state's milk production hit 950 million litres, a new record and 4.5% more than the previous year.

The state government's celebrating the result, noting that it follows ABS data from 2018-19 showing dairy was Tasmania's highest value commodity for the year, lifting to $457 million, courtesy of higher farm gate prices.

In a statement, the government has outlined how it is delivering $900,000 over four years through the ‘Grow more, Milk more and Make more’ initiative to work with dairy farmers on productivity, farm business and value-adding strategies.

Support includes a dairy-specific round of the highly successful On Farm Energy Audit and Capital Grants Program, a Dairy Extension program that delivered the very successful Farm Manager/2IC training program, financial management mentoring and business planning program for dairy farmers and the Stock Underpass Program that assists farmers to construct road underpasses to safely and efficiently move stock

In 2018-19, the state’s total agricultural production was $1.64 billion, with the government aiming to grow that figure to $10 billion by 2050.
