Burnie's court complex is moving out of town.
$15 million was committed at the last election to upgrade the Alexander Street courts, but Attorney General Elise Archer says it's become clear they're no longer fit for purpose, especially with social distancing requirements.
"A thorough assessment of the current building has made clear that the best and most efficient option is the development of court facilities in a new location," she said.
The plan is now to move the justice precinct to the old UTAS Cradle Coast campus on Mooreville Road by late 2023, after the uni relocates to West Park in the second half of next year.
"About 50,000 Tasmanians rely on access to the courts in Burnie each year alone. Importantly, this relocation development will ensure minimal interruption to service delivery," Minister Archer said.
$5.9 million of the original funding is being brought forward under the state government's COVID-19 response to accelerate the transition.
