A four-year-old boy has died after being hit by a garbage truck while riding his bicycle in Launceston this afternoon.
Police have confirmed the child couldn't be revived at the scene.
The incident occurred at about 12:15pm on Bishops Drive in Newnham, where authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances.
“Our thoughts are with the boy’s family and loved ones at this tragic time. This has been a highly distressing day for those involved and I ask for privacy for the little boy’s family during such a difficult time," Inspector Ruth Orr said.
Details of events in the lead-up to the crash still aren't known.
“Police crash investigators, forensics officers and investigators from the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator have all been on scene today. Witnesses will be interviewed and any available footage from houses and vehicles reviewed.
“Counselling and support has been offered to all emergency services who attended. Police are also liaising with the family, driver and those affected to ensure appropriate care and support is available to them.”
