Labor's Mersey Community Hospital funding injection

The reinstatement of maternity services at the Mersey Community Hospital in Latrobe has been met with applause.

Labor is promising it will bring back maternity and birthing facilities at the hospital if it wins the state election on May 1.

In 2016, the Liberals centralised maternity services to Burnie, forcing many women from the Devonport and Latrobe areas to travel to give birth.

Steve Martin from the Mersey Community Hospital Support Group says increased services will help ease pressure on the health system in the North West.

“This investment in the Mersey and its community of new permanent positions, upgraded facilities, and the elevation of maternity services to a level 2, will help alleviate pressure on the already stressed health system, provide local beds, stop patients from being transferred away from their support, and help strengthen health services in the region,” said Mr. Martin.

"Additionally, making the MCH the statewide training hub for the National Centre for Rural Health and Integrated Maternity Care will create positive opportunities, help attract medical and nursing staff such as Rural Generalist Doctors with specialist skills in anaesthesiology, emergency care, mental health, obstetrics, and palliative care, as well as nurse endoscopists and nurse practitioners," he added.
