Cradle Ghost Authority: Burnie bails

burnie city council

Burnie City Council is withdrawing from the Cradle Coast Authority, as it grapples to get on top of financial woes.

In announcing the decision, Mayor Steve Kons said remaining in the group of nine north-west councils was not "good value for money" for his municipality's ratepayers.

CCA chief representative and Latrobe mayor Peter Freshney has labelled the move "disappointing".

“The past three weeks alone, have proven the value of working together for regional priorities” Chairman Sid Sidebottom said, referring to CCA’s current state election advocacy on behalf of the region.

“For every dollar that Member Councils contribute to CCA each year, we typically secure between four and six dollars extra from other sources. This is a major benefit to our region, as evidenced by the current state election campaign.” he said.

Burnie's membership will expire in June next year.

It's not the only cost-cutting measure being taken to address the $2 million operating deficit...

The Burnie Regional Museum will remain closed indefinitely, while the Art Gallery will close at the end of the financial year, along with the the Visitor Information Centre.

"Visitor Information Centres are becoming less effective, relevant or viable as digital delivery becomes more important. Council cannot justify the continuing cost of operating the Visitor Information Centre with the reduced number of tourists and the absence of cruise ships for the foreseeable future," a council statement said.

A number of staff are expected to lose their jobs as a result of the changes.

"Council management has advised all staff and relevant unions of these decisions and will continue to work closely with all staff and unions throughout implementation."
