Vaccine implicated in Tasmanian death

One of two new cases of blood clotting death following a first dose of AstraZeneca covid vaccine is a 44 year old Tasmanian man.

The Therapeutic Goods Administration has added the death to its data on rare fatal side effects of the vaccine.

A coroner will determine an official cause of death.

Health Minister Jeremy Rockliff broke the news.

"On behalf of the Tasmanian government and personally, I extend my deepest sympathies to the man's family, his friends and his loved ones, I can confirm the man died last weekend in hospital where he had been receiving treatment."

AstraZeneca is recommended for those aged 60 and over with Tasmania's Director of Public Health Dr Mark Veitch repeating the advice it is up those younger to decide whether they will have that more readily available brand.

"If people are under the age of 60 and wish to consider AstraZeneca vaccine it's a very serious discussion they have to have with their provider."

A 48 year old Victorian woman has also recently died from blood clotting in the wake of a first dose of the AstraZeneca covid vaccine.

Four other people are being treated for adverse reactions.
