Another cost of living strike is about to be unleashed across Australia with electricity prices set to rise as much as 8% above inflation.
Wholesale costs have jumped by more than 41% partly due to coal station outages in Victoria.
Marc White from Hobart based consulting company Goanna Energy explains why Tasmania, which is 100% self sufficient with renewable energy, is dragged into the equation.
"Because Tasmania's linked through Basslink to the Victorian market and in fact Hydro Tasmania is obliged to take into account the Victorian market pricing when it issues its Tasmanian pricing."
He anticipates government intervention, to soften the blow to households already battling runaway inflation, will limit the rise to around 5% in Tasmania from July 1st.
