If there is one thing Star Wars fans can agree on, it is that you simply cannot keep a good Sith down. Especially one as resilient (and stubborn) as Maul. Lucasfilm Animation has just dropped the official trailer and poster for the highly anticipated series “Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord,” and if the footage is anything to go by, we are in for a beautifully dark, pulpy ride.

Scheduled to premiere exclusively on Disney+ on 6 April 2026, this series marks a significant return to the gritty underworld of a galaxy far, far away.

Set in the chaotic aftermath of The Clone Wars, the series finds Maul at a crossroads. The Empire is rising, the Jedi are scattered, and our favourite tattooed antagonist is doing what he does best: plotting.

Maul is attempting to rebuild his criminal syndicate on a planet that has managed to remain untouched by the Galactic Empire. However, the story takes a sharp turn when he encounters a disillusioned young Jedi Padawan. Could this be the apprentice he needs to finally achieve his revenge, or will this unlikely duo end in a clash of lightsabers?

Behind the Scenes

It wouldn’t be a Lucasfilm Animation project without the guiding hand of Dave Filoni. Serving as the creator and executive producer, Filoni is joined by Matt Michnovetz and supervising director Brad Rau. This is the team that has consistently delivered the most nuanced storytelling in the franchise, so expectations are understandably high.

The series is described as a “pulpy adventure,” suggesting a shift in tone from the grand scale of the Skywalker Saga toward something more intimate, atmospheric, and perhaps a little more dangerous.

A Stellar Voice Cast

One of the most exciting aspects of Shadow Lord is the return of Sam Witwer as the voice of Maul. Witwer has inhabited this character for over a decade, bringing a level of Shakespearean tragedy to the role that has made Maul a fan favourite.

Pop It On Your Watch List

Disney+ is opting for a staggered release schedule that will keep the conversation buzzing for weeks. Two episodes will premiere every week starting 6 April, leading up to a grand finale. In a move that surprised absolutely no one (but delighted everyone), the final two episodes will air on May the 4th, the ultimate Star Wars holiday.
