Every now and then, a casting announcement drops that makes you pause, blink, and realise the universe has actually handed you exactly what you wanted. That is the immediate takeaway from the first official trailer for Ride or Die, Prime Video’s upcoming high-octane action comedy. Pairing Academy Award winner Octavia Spencer with Ted Lasso favourite Hannah Waddingham is a stroke of absolute genius, and frankly, July cannot come quickly enough.

Prime Video has just released the first full look at the eight-episode series, which is set to premiere globally on Wednesday, July 15. Produced by Paramount Television Studios and Amazon MGM Studios.

The Plot: Secrets, Lies, and European Getaways

The premise of Ride or Die is delightfully chaotic. We meet Debbie Claybourne (played by Spencer) and Judith Burton (played by Waddingham), two absolute best friends who believe they share everything. There are no secrets between them—or so Debbie thinks.

As it happens, Judith has omitted one rather large detail from her resume: she is a highly skilled international assassin.

When a mysterious figure from Judith’s covert past resurfaces and a targeted hit goes spectacularly wrong, the duo is forced into survival mode. What follows is a frantic, high-stakes road trip across Europe. Debbie and Judith find themselves pursued by an exhausting combination of local law enforcement, rival trained killers, and some deeply unpleasant international criminals. It gives a completely new meaning to the phrase “travel buddy”.

A Stellar Creative Pedigree

Beyond the central pairing, the series boasts a remarkably strong supporting cast. Keep an eye out for Ed Skrein as “Billy,” Calam Lynch as “Sam,” and Savannah Steyn as “Queenie.” Crucially, the legendary Bill Nighy also appears as a character ominous titled “The Director,” which practically guarantees some delightfully dry British wit.

Behind the scenes, the project is steered by creator and executive producer Tessa Coates, alongside showrunner Matt Miller. Direction is handled by Peyton Reed, who certainly knows his way around balancing high-stakes action with genuine comedic timing. Both Spencer and Waddingham are also serving as executive producers, ensuring their distinct energies are baked directly into the DNA of the show.

Why This One Is Worth Your Time

We have seen plenty of buddy-cop and accidental-spy comedies over the years, but Ride or Die feels refreshing precisely because of who is at the wheel. Spencer has an unmatched ability to ground chaotic situations with relatable, everyday exasperation, while Waddingham possesses the sheer statuesque charisma to completely sell the role of an elite killer.

Watching their friendship navigate the sudden introduction of automatic weapons and European car chases promises to be an absolute joy. Mark your calendars for July 15—this is one road trip you will not want to miss.
