The Geminid meteor shower has been active since December 4, building up to its peak on Sunday night, which is expected to offer the best viewing opportunity of the year.

Known as one of the most spectacular annual meteor showers, the Geminids are bright and abundant.

This year, they are predicted to deliver frequent, vivid streaks late on Sunday, December 14, continuing into the early hours of Monday, December 15. With minimal lunar interference and favorable weather forecasts for much of the country, the display could be one of the strongest in recent years.

The Geminids will be visible across Australia, from Darwin to Hobart. On the east coast, the best viewing time is between 1:30 am and 4:30 am (AEDT) on Monday, December 15. The number of meteors you’ll see will depend on factors like your location, light pollution, and cloud cover.

There are no guarantees on the number of meteors viewers can expect, but with favorable conditions, estimates range from 10-20 in Victoria to over 40 in Queensland, improving the further north you are in the country.
